Only the most important projects are listed here. The criterias for establishing which research is important, are simple. Any project that receives funds is considered important. Any research that results in a useful product is considered important. Once an ongoing, unfunded research is published in Color Research and Application or Color Technology (the journals with highest impact factor in Colour Science), is considered important.

I. Completed Projects

A. Traditional Thai Colour Naming

Traditional Thai Colour Naming Project was part of the first five-year academic development plan of Chulalongkorn University (2008-2012). The allocated budget for this plan is known as Chulalongkorn Centenary Fund. The project was initiated in 2008 and started in 2009. Everyone in the Department of Imaging and Printing Technology was invited to participate. Activities in the first two years have been of preparative nature, such as: ordering Munsell sheets from abroad, recovering some of the work done by Prof. Sakda Siripant until 1988 (mostly destroyed by floods), investigating Thai colour names in four regions of Thailand.

In January 2011, Dr. Pichayada Katemake and Dr. Eng. Razvan Ion Preda assumed full responsibility for this project with only two years left to finalize a four year project. The project was mostly done in the Colour Research and Multimedia Laboratory, created by Dr. Katemake at the end of 2011 and merged with the Colour Science Research Unit in 2013. The output of this project are:

  1. 1. the first internationally recognized method for analyzing and identifying traditional Thai Colours, published in Colour Research and Application Journal in two articles and in two international congress proceeding articles, which can be accessed in our Downloads section;

  2. 2. the first ever released Traditional Thai Color Name Dictionary, presenting 147 traditional Thai colour names analyzed, identified, quantitatively described, explained, transliterated and translated, published in Color Research and Application journal;

  3. 3. one scientific software named Trichromatic Colour Analyser, described in 30% of the article published in Colour Research and Application journal as part of the improved methodology for analyzing and identifying traditional Thai colours.

Long before the above listed successful output, Prof. Dr. Lindsay MacDonald expressed following opinion about this research:"I found Dr Pitchayada's research very interesting and relevant and I believe a great credit to Thailand."

Per Jutterström, from NCS Colour AB, who supported this project, wrote that "this kind of activities is what we really like to be involved in for the future so please keep that in mind for next time."

Below are exerpts from reviews of the published methodology and results:

This project was funded by Chulalongkorn University Centenary Academic Development Project and by authors' personal funds. Important support was received from Epson (Thailand) co., Ltd. that provided several modern scanners free of charge and from NCS Colour AB that provided a free licence for using the proprietary NCS colour system as digitized colour dictionary.

B. Trichromatic Colour Analyser System

Trichromatic Colour Analyser (TCA) is the first distributable colorimetric system that uses a commercial flatbed scanner as a wide port measuring colorimeter. Developed initially for the research project of analyzing and identifying traditional Thai colours, the software was expanded to a system for general use, in order to fill in an empty niche in the field of colorimetric measurement and analysing tools. The greatest advantage given by TCA is the flexible size of areas that can be measured, from 0.07 sqmm to 100 sqcm.

The system can be used for Colour Identification, Colour Quality Control, Trichromatic Colour Analysis, Trichromatic Colour Matching and for performing a long list of colorimetric calculations that exploit its unique feature of measuring flexible sized areas. Calculation modules are continuously extended and improved. TCA uses digitized values for Munsell, Resene, Crayola and NBS-ISCC colour dictionaries that fit in the TCA colour space.

The colour correction methodology used for the TCA software developed for analyzing and identifying the traditional Thai colours has been published in Color Research and Application Journal in the article "Complete Study of Traditional Thai Colors used in Mural Paintings: Traditional Thai Color Name Dictionary". General informations about the Software System developed out of it are published in the AIC congress proceedings from July 2013. However, the algorithms and software code remain proprietary.

This project was finalized without any funding and support. The software system is used ongoing in funded and unfunded research projects. Tools have been developed continously according to the needs required by these projects, therefore, the system has been in a perpetuos beta-version. The software system has been built as a state-of-the-art commercial product and is distributable in its present beta-version. Product development has been put on hold starting with 2015. Resumption of development will be decided by the authors when research environment and collaboration conditions will allow it.
